Krapp’s Last Tape
November 29 @ 20:30
For more than forty years, on his birthday, Krapp, an obscure and solitary writer, records the significant events of the past year. He meticulously archives these recordings, creating a vast collection of “past days.” On the day of his 69th birthday, Krapp decides to listen again to a specific tape – the one he recorded on his 39th birthday, thirty years earlier. As he listens to the old recording, Krapp confronts memories, events, and choices from his youth that shaped his future and present. All of this unfolds as he prepares to make one final recording that night – a recording that might be his last.
Within the work, there are moments where Krapp experiences a loneliness akin to what the last person on Earth might feel. The action is set in another “Garden of Eden” – a scenographic allegory to the primal garden, a reference to a time or a “season” that is light-years away. The only evidence of this time is the debris of a ‘past technological progress,’ a progress that ‘propelled’ character into this almost extraterrestrial landscape. A landscape that appears dystopian, yet strangely fitting for the existential storm that Krapp is facing.
Krapp uses these “debris” of memories as solace, refuge, and tools of communication with what lies beyond – where possibly the dichotomy between God and man is lifted.
