The Monster Comes

December 10 @ 10:30 - 11:40

The monster comes based on the novel of the same name by Patrick Ness, inspired by an original idea by Sovonne Dowd adapted by Sally Cookson and Adam Peck

Ever since his mother started treatment, thirteen-year-old Connor O’Malley has been afraid of the night and its nightmares. Almost every night, at seven minutes after midnight, a huge monster in the form of an itamu, an ancient tree, visits him to tell him three stories. For Connor, however, the real nightmare unfolds every day: his mother is battling cancer, his grandmother is quite intrusive, his father has become an outsider, and he is bullied by his classmates. As he gets lost in the monster’s narratives, Connor realizes that his real demon is his own truth, a truth that lies deep within himself.

American author Patrick Ness’s shocking young adult novel, published in 2011, was adapted for the theater eleven years later for the Old Vic Theater by creators Sally Cookson and Adam Peck, in creative partnership with the troupe. Irini Andreou and Yiannis Karaoulis carefully read the text to implement a stage project that moves between reality and fantasy. The creative team and the actors aspire to give voice to the young hero’s mental landscape, where fear, anger, sadness, isolation, but also closeness, understanding, recognition reside.

The Monster Comes is a powerful story that combines simplicity with depth, anguish with optimism. A story that poses key, compelling questions, both from the perspective of a teenager and that of an adult, which are connected to important stages of a person’s life. Primarily it demonstrates that adolescence is a difficult time in itself and loss is often a threshold experience for an adolescent to cope with. However, someone needs to listen to him in order to understand and deal with this feeling.
